Utility Assistance - Those who meet certain income-eligibility and geographic requirements may obtain help with their energy costs from one or more of the Energy Assistance programs administered by New Opportunities Inc. The organization’s Energy Division offers both financial aid and, where needed, engineering support in the form of Weatherization. Both are paid for by a mix of federal and state funds; these funds have been enhanced by a specialized network of public and private partnerships.
Each request for aid is handled individually and, initially, face-to-face. A person’s application is reviewed by a skilled staff member who is familiar with the variety of programs available. This intake interviewer is specially trained to assess how best to help a qualified applicant meet their energy needs in the most cost-effective way.
Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program (HPRP)
The purpose of the Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program (HPRP) is to give homelessness prevention assistance to households who would otherwise become homeless and to quickly re-house those already without a home. Whether applicants are suffering from the effects of the current economic crisis or from other long-term or chronic problems, their needs will be addressed.
Clients of HPRP, both individuals and families, will be re-housed in a more stable location, one in which they no longer have to worry about being without a place to live. Thus services to clients include security deposits, rental assistance, utility deposits, utility assistance and hotel or motel vouchers for relocation.
HPRP also provides case management, coordinates services and conducts outreach and engagement to let more people know about this supportive program. They also guide the housing search and placement activities, offer legal services related to housing and assist with credit counseling.
