Full Description:
Emergency Assistance
All emergency family and personal assistance is provided with dignity and respect to the individual(s) involved. Some of the most common ways such assistance is provided include the following, as determined by local need and available resources:
Food Pantries and Food Baskets
Food pantries and food baskets offer a quick remedy for those who have a place to prepare and eat food. The Army sometimes joins with others in the community to set up and maintain this service, but in Hattiesburg, Social Service maintains a food pantry to provide on-site availability to clients. Nonperishable foods are provided. All foodstuffs are kept in a clean, accessible place and are not distributed after expiration dates.
Utilities and Rent Assistance
Utilities and rent assistance are paid only to meet an emergency; e.g., a deposit needed-when moving into a new home. In the hot summer months, fans are provided to elderly and fragile citizens to prevent harm from excessive heat.
Household and Clothing Vouchers
Emergency household furnishings or clothing assistance may be needed following a fire, tornado or flood, or when a person is establishing a new household following a period of homelessness. Others may use this service to replace worn-out items that are critical to the home. These services are supplied as part of a total casework plan. When the applicant is known to other voluntary or governmental agencies, The Salvation Army develops and agreement or understanding among the agencies as to which one is supplying what items.
Furnishings may come form several sources; a local merchant, a neighborhood thrift store, the Corps salvage program, or an Adult Rehabilitation Center.
Travelers Assistance
The Salvation Army provides direct assistance to travelers who are in crisis situations. Temporary lodging and meals are provided for needy individuals in emergency situations.
